Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Neoral (cyclosporine) is a widely-used immunosuppressant medication used to minimize symptoms in certain conditions as well as to prevent organ rejection after transplants. It also sees widespread use in veterinary fields.

Before You Buy Neoral

To prevent confusion, please note that there are two types of cyclosporine available:

  • The original active ingredient, labeled 'Cyclosporine'
  • A modified active ingredient, labeled 'Cyclosporine (modified)'

Neoral contains the unmodified 'cyclosporine'. Do not buy Neoral if you were prescribed 'cyclosporine (modified)' as these two medications are not the same. Likewise, do not replace 'cyclosporine (modified)' with 'cyclosporine'.

Immunosuppression with Neoral

As the name implies, an immunosuppressant inhibits the immune system. This action reduces the symptoms of conditions caused by an overactive immune system, though it also makes patients taking the medication more vulnerable to illness or infections.

Conditions commonly treated with Neoral include:

  • Psoriasis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Pyoderma gangrenosum
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Autoimmune urticaria (hives)
  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome)
  • Ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease)

Neoral is also frequently used to prevent rejection of a transplanted organ, in which case treatment will begin in the hospital.

Because immunosuppression has a major impact on the body, it's important to monitor the body's reaction as well as be aware of potential hazards:

  • Be sure all physicians, dentists, and other health-care related practitioners are aware Neoral is being taken.
  • Schedule regular blood tests every two weeks to ensure medication is working properly.
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups every three months to stay on top of possible dental infections.
  • Take care to avoid exposure to illness and monitor all wounds closely for signs of infection; seek medical care if illness or infection does occur.
  • Refrain from taking any other medications, supplements or vaccinations without explicit doctor or pharmacist approval; other treatments may alter Neoral's effectiveness.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as it will diminish effectiveness.

Please see the insert included with the medication for a full list of possible side effects.

Dosage & Administration

This medication is available in a variety of forms, from tablets to injections. The ideal administration method depends, of course, on the condition being treated; however, when several options are equally effective, many patients prefer to buy Neoral in tablet form for convenience.

Obviously with such a range of conditions the dosage and frequency of administration may vary significantly for individuals. The following list of treatments are averages; physician instructions should always be followed as closely as possible:

  • Neoral is usually taken twice a day regardless of the condition being treated.
  • Each dose should be taken 12 hours apart to maximize presence of the drug in the body.
  • Organ Transplants -  10 to 15 mg daily, tapering off over time.
  • Psoriasis - 2.5 mg daily, may be adjusted according to patient response.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis - 1.5 to 3 mg daily, increased to 5 mg daily if needed.
  • Atopic Dermatitis - 2.5 to 5 mg daily.
  • Dry Eyes - 2 drops daily.

The risk of side effects with Neoral increase with the length of treatment; rarely does treatment last longer than 1 year. In many cases treatment will last only a few days to suppress a 'flare-up' in chronic conditions, though in more severe cases, such as organ transplants, it may last up to a year.
